Quantizer

Although each instance of the Notes module can work as an independent quantizer, they all share the same settings available on the Quantizer pane.

  • Octaves: sets the maximum range of the Quantizer in relation to the root key.
  • Root Key: sets the root key of the scale / quantizer.

The Quantizer has 2 main modes: Standard and Microtonal.

Both modes feature a Scale Preset drop-down menu and Save / Delete buttons.
To delete an scale from the Scale Preset menu, click on the lock icon to unlock it and press Delete.

NOTE: The scale presets can also be edited using any text editor. To access the Scales.json file on a Mac, right-click the application, select Show Package Contents, and then go to Contents/Resources/Settings. On a Windows PC, open the Resources folder and then open the Settings folder.

Standard

The Standard mode is designed to work with standard 12-tone scales.

CV Toolkit includes the following standard scales: Chromatic, Major, Minor, Minor Harmonic, Minor Melodic, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, Blues, Dorian, Lydian, Locrian, Arabic, Augmented, Whole Tone, Algerian, Byzantine, Japanese, and Romanian Minor.

Scales can also be created or edited using the Scale Editor.

The Keyboard Represensation available at the bottom of the Quantizer pane is useful for quickly visualizing which notes are currently active.
Keep in mind that the represensation is read-only therefore any changes to the scale must be done through the Scale Editor.

Microtonal

The microtonal mode is based on the Scala format.

The following value types can be entered in the Scale Editor:

  • Float numbers (120.) are added as cents to the root note.
  • Fractions (19/15) are multiplied by the root note.
  • Integers (5) are also multiplied by the root note.
  • Hertz (150hz) values are used as absolute values (no relation to root note).

Scales will only be repeated over multiple octaves if the last value in the scale is either 2 (integer) or a fraction that results in 2 (2/1, 4/2, 10/5, etc).

Scala files can also be imported using the Import Scala File button.
Keep in mind that imported scales are not automatically saved to the Scale Preset dropdown menu. If you'd like to save an imported scale for late use, make sure to click on the Save button.
